Once the closures goes into effect, visitors will still be able to access into the first 300 feet a substantial amount of the tunnel from the south (parking lot side) entrance. The bypass will be clearly marked with signs. The existing Tunnel Hill Trail will remain open to hikers during the project, but for safety reasons, cyclists will be required to dismount and walk their bikes across the mountain using the bypass trail detour. This temporary by-pass trail then connects with the existing Tunnel Hill Trail. A temporary “bridge” has been installed across the Canal prism that connects with the abandoned logging road that provides a gentler grade to the top of Tunnel Hill. To provide thru-access for bicyclists during the project, a bypass trail will be opened using an old logging road on the berm side of the Canal upstream of the south tunnel portal. At this point you can choose to go forward through the tunnel or head to the right, which is a path that goes up and over the mountain. In about 1/2 a mile or so you will see the West Entrance to the tunnel. There is a trail head just off of the parking lot. This will lead you into a parking lot where you can leave your car and head out on foot. If you go to Paw Paw, West Virginia and head north on Highway 9, you will cross the Potomac River and within about 1/4 of a mile, there is a turn off on the right.
